Cartridge Seals

Cartridge Mechanical Seals

Engineered Single and Double Cartridge Sealing Solutions

Cartridge Seals

Cartridge mechanical seals are supplied as a complete, pre-assembled unit. They are designed to simplify installation, reduce setup variability, and improve consistency across a wide range of rotating equipment.

With standardized designs, environmental control ports, and proven sealing arrangements, cartridge seals are often the most practical route to improved seal reliability and reduced maintenance risk.

Discuss Cartridge Seal Options

Why choose a cartridge seal?

Compared with component seals, cartridge designs help reduce installation variables and improve repeatability across sites and teams.

Simplified Installation

Greatly simplified installation procedures reduce setup time and reduce the need for multiple separate component adjustments.

Fewer Installation Errors

Increased reliability through consistent pre-set geometry and fewer opportunities for misalignment, incorrect setting, or damage during assembly.

Inventory Standardization

Standardized seal families can consolidate inventory and simplify spares management across multiple assets and locations.

Simplified Installation

Pre-assembled design reduces setup time and complexity.

Fewer Installation Errors

More consistent results with fewer adjustment points.

Inventory Standardization

Streamlines spares and reduces variety across assets.

Single and Double Cartridge Seals

Cartridge seals are available in single and double configurations. Both are typically offered in ANSI and ANSI+ (big bore) gland formats,
with environmental control ports for API seal support plans.

Single Cartridge Seals

Single cartridge seals use one set of sealing faces (rotary and stationary). They are commonly selected for general duties
where the process fluid provides adequate lubrication and cooling.

Typical features: broad equipment fit, optimized gland design, environmental control ports for flush and quench arrangements.

Double Cartridge Seals

Double cartridge seals use two sets of faces and create a liquid or gas layer between the process media and atmosphere.
The barrier or buffer may be pressurized depending on the duty.

Why specify a double seal:

  • Improved safety for volatile or hazardous media
  • Extremely low emissions to atmosphere
  • Improved seal life by controlling the fluid film
  • Suitable barrier medium when process fluid is a poor lubricant
  • Better survival in abrasive or clogging service
  • Temperature stabilization at the seal faces

Single Cartridge Seals

One set of faces for general duties. Broad equipment fit with ports for flush and quench arrangements.

Double Cartridge Seals

Two sets of faces with a barrier or buffer layer to reduce emissions and improve safety and seal life.

  • Lower emissions
  • Safer for hazardous media
  • Better lubrication and cooling control
  • Improved performance in difficult service

Cartridge Seal Families

AESSEAL® offers a wide range of cartridge seal designs. Below is a practical grouping of common families to help you navigate the options.
If you are unsure which group fits your duty, contact us and we will guide you.

Specialist Applications

Where equipment or duty conditions require a specific seal arrangement, we can identify the best-fit AESSEAL® design family and support plan.

Machine-Specific Designs

Cartridge seals are available for a wide range of OEM pump and mixer designs, including:

Sulzer Ahlstar (CKSA, CKDA)
Richter PCK, SCK (FIDSNMR)
Durco GP I & GP II Polychem L-Series (L-Seal)
Progressing cavity pumps (PCPS range)

Oil, Gas & Petrochemical

Designs suited to hazardous service and emissions control:

CAPI-A Single
CAPI-A Dual

Double seal arrangements may be specified to reduce emissions and improve safety for volatile or hazardous media.

Gas Seals and Support Panels

Gas seal options and support equipment are available for specialist duties, including:

UDGS (Universal seal)
GAS-03 (Gas Panel)
TURBO (Compressors and Support System)

Seal selection matters, avoid costly compromises

With the wide range of cartridge mechanical seal options available, choosing a less-than-optimal design can reduce reliability and increase lifecycle cost. Consult with an experienced seal specialist to confirm design features, materials, and support plan requirements for your specific duty.
