The following API plans are commonly applied to control seal chamber temperature,
pressure, contamination, and lubrication. Proper plan selection directly impacts seal life and reliability.
Plan 02![]() Dead-ended seal chamber. Use: Cool, clean fluids in low-speed pumps. Requires jacket for cylindrical chambers. |
Plan 11![]() Recirculation from discharge through orifice. Use: Clean, non-polymerizing fluids. Calculate orifice size. Not for solids. |
Plan 13![]() Recirculation from seal chamber to suction. Use: Vertical pumps or low ΔP. Verify pressure differential. |
Plan 21![]() Discharge recirculation through cooler. Use: Hot non-polymerizing fluids. Cooler must follow orifice. |
Plan 23![]() Seal chamber recirculation through exchanger. Use: Hot clean services. Strict piping orientation required. |
Plan 32![]() External flush injected into chamber. Use: Dirty or high-temp fluids. Flush must be reliable & compatible. |
Plan 41![]() Cyclone separator + cooler recirculation. Use: Hot services with solids. Cooler maintenance required. |
Plan 52![]() Unpressurized buffer system (double seal). Use: No contamination allowed. Never run low on buffer fluid. |
Plan 53A![]() Pressurized barrier fluid system. Use: Hazardous or toxic fluids. Maintain pressure above process. |
